Two Women Killed in High-Speed SUV Crash in League City; Vehicle Strikes Tree Near Clear Creek
LEAGUE CITY, Texas, Sept. 24, 2023 – Two women died late Sunday when their silver Jeep Grand Cherokee veered off the road and collided with a tree, according to the League City Police Department. The incident occurred around 10 p.m. on West Bay Area Blvd., shortly after passing Lynn Gripon Park.
The force of the impact uprooted the tree, snapping it in two and causing about two-thirds of it to break off, before the vehicle flipped over. Police believe the SUV struck the tree broadside, leaving a large indentation visible between the driver’s side front and back doors.
Public Information Officer Jose Ortega of the League City Police Department stated that both women died at the scene. The driver was 27 years old, and the other woman was 32. Their identities have not been released as authorities are working to notify their immediate families.
A motorist traveling south on Bay Area Blvd. witnessed the crash and contacted 911. A Friendswood Police Department officer, who was nearby, arrived first at the scene and alerted League City police. A local resident who was at a nearby basketball court also reported hearing the crash and walked up to investigate.
The area where the crash occurred is located just before Clear Creek, marking the border between Galveston and Harris counties. The speed limit on this stretch of road is 35 mph, and it is not well-lit. The road also features a slight curve as it approaches Clear Creek and Grissom Road.
The League City Crash Reconstruction Team is investigating the incident. Speeding is believed to have been a contributing factor, although the official cause has not yet been confirmed.
