Off-Duty Texas DPS Trooper Involved in Shooting at Houston Apartment Complex
HOUSTON, Texas, Sept. 25, 2023 – A Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) trooper shot a suspect he believed was attempting to break into his apartment shortly after midnight. According to Houston Police, who responded to the incident, the suspect allegedly shot through the door of the apartment before being shot by the off-duty trooper. The incident occurred at an apartment complex located at 500 Crawford, on the 5th floor.
Houston Police administered first aid to the suspect, who was found bleeding at the scene. No stray bullets entered neighboring apartments, and no other individuals were present in the trooper’s apartment at the time of the incident.
The suspect, described as a Black male in his 30s, also resides in the same building. Both the Texas Rangers and Houston Police Department are conducting separate investigations into the incident. It is currently unknown why the suspect was allegedly trying to break in, or whether he was at the wrong door. It is also unknown at this time whether the individual was under the influence of any substances or disoriented.
The apartment complex where the shooting occurred is situated across the street from Minute Maid Park. Further details are pending as the investigation continues.
