Train Cars Derail, Flip Over in Santa Fe; No Injuries or Hazardous Spills Reported
SANTA FE, N.M., Sept. 21, 2023 – A Union Pacific train derailed at approximately 4:30 PM on Thursday in the 18500 block of state Highway 6. According to Union Pacific, six cars derailed near Alvin, with two of the cars flipping onto their sides.
Victor Boudreaux, Santa Fe Fire and Rescue Assistant Fire Chief, confirmed that there were no hazardous materials spilled during the incident. Only plastic pellets were reported to have spilled out of the derailed cars.
There were no injuries reported in connection with the derailment. Officials have not determined the cause of the incident, though it occurred in an area where the tracks split. Investigation into the derailment is ongoing.
