Officer-Involved Shooting in Auburndale Leads to Death of Armed Suspect
AUBURNDALE, FLORIDA, Sept. 12, 2023 – Officials have released details regarding an officer-involved shooting that occurred in the evening hours of September 12, 2023, in the city of Auburndale.
Sheriff Grady Judd and Auburndale Police Chief Terry Storie briefed the media on the incident which is presently under scrutiny by the 10th Judicial Circuit Officer Involved Deadly Incident Task Force. The occurrence unfolded at the entrance to the Westside Ridge neighborhood on Westside Ridge Blvd.
Auburndale Police and Polk County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) deputies were called to respond to an armed suspect, later identified as 55-year-old Angelo Theodore Curcione, with a date of birth registered as August 27, 1968. Curcione reportedly had an extensive and violent criminal record in New Jersey, including a term in state prison on charges of attempted murder.
On the evening in question, Curcione was armed with a large knife and allegedly threatened officers and deputies at the scene, resulting in law enforcement discharging their weapons. Unfortunately, Curcione was shot and subsequently pronounced dead at the scene. Thankfully, no officers or deputies sustained injuries during the ordeal.
