At about 8:40 p.m. on March 31, 2022, dispatchers received a call of an officer-involved shooting. Harris County Deputy Shot and Killed Outside Joe V’s Smart Shop off FM1960

At about 8:40 p.m. on March 31, 2022, dispatchers received a call of an officer-involved shooting at the Joe V’s Smart Shop (2929 FM1960 @ Aldine Westfield). According to Sheriff Ed. Gonzalez,  Deputy Darren Almendarez, a 23 year veteran of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office and was out shopping with his wife for his sister’s birthday when he observed a burglary of a motor vehicle, possibly a catalytic converter theft in progress and intervened to stop the crime after he told his wife to run away.

As he approached, he was confronted by two or three males. He was able to grab one of their pistols during a struggle but was able to retrieve his pistol and returned fire and strike two of the suspects. The third suspect is on the run and there is an active investigation to find him.
